Chemical Handling

Inventory

  • Chemical inventory is used to keep track of chemicals that you and your faculty supervisor purchase, use, store or ship.
  • The link to update your supervisor’s inventory is found under EHS Assist on the EHSRM hazardous materials page.
  • Updating the faculty chemical inventory is the responsibility of the faculty member or an assigned individual working in the lab.

Storage

  • ALL chemicals must be segregated based on compatibility in order to prevent dangerous chemical reactions that result in serious harm to users.
  • Follow the NFPA rating found on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) or view the information and templates provided by EHSRM.

Use

  • When handling hazardous chemicals, you must read the handling protocols for your chemicals. You can use the SDS provided by the distributor/manufacturer, or you can find information on the EHSRM hazardous materials page.

Disposal

Shipping Chemicals to and from UAF

  • To ship chemicals to and from the field OR to another facility, you MUST SHIP THROUGH A CERTIFIED SHIPPER.
